Salt Pools

Why do I want a salt pool?

What it’s not!  A salt pool is not a chlorine free pool.  It is actually a system where a component generates chlorine through electrolysis.  Here’s how it works.  Food grade, granulated salt (NaCl) is added to your pool water.  It takes about one teaspoon of salt per gallon of water.  The “salt water”, which is actually about 10% of that found in the ocean, passes through a cell where it is converted to hypochlorous acid.  That’s the same byproduct of any chlorine that is mixed with water. Your tears are actually saltier than the salt water content of a salt pool.  Most people do not taste or sense the salt in the water.

What benefits can I expect?  Salt pools are a more stable source of chlorine.  The chloramine problem that requires weekly “shocking” in a regularly chlorinated pool is nearly non-existent with a salt pool.  The water has a softer and silkier feel to it, with less eye and mucous membrane irritation.  Your salt pool will have a tendency to bounce back quicker after heavy rains.  It will also have a more consistent level of chlorine, greatly reducing chlorine fluctuation.  You enjoy the benefit of not handling chlorine on a routine basis.  By eliminating the use of acidic chlorine tablets, you will be balancing your pH and alkalinity less frequently.

The initial cost associated with the installation of a salt system is offset by eliminating the purchase of “shock” and tablets.  The only modification to your existing equipment is the addition of the salt cell and a power center.  It installs easily by a professional in about one hour.  The life expectancy of the salt cell itself is about three to five years.  In the long run the costs balances out, but think of the many benefits that you enjoy.
