WHAT’S UP WITH PHOSPHATES?
Phosphates occur naturally in your swimming pool. They can also be introduced to your water through other means. Sources range from decaying plant matter, fertilizers, mineral treatment chemicals, acid rain, ground water runoff, fresh water fill, bather wastes, and even dead skin particles.
Phosphates, in the simple sense, are plant or algae foods and nutrients. Even at low concentrations, phosphates can cause accelerated algae growth in pools that are just slightly out of balance. Properly maintained pools are less susceptible to the impact of phosphates, but may still be affected by them. Higher levels of phosphates can create higher chlorine demands and make for greater difficulty in getting rid of algae and keeping it out of your pool.
Phosphate levels over 300ppb require attention. This is a simple process achieved with the addition of a liquid phosphate remover which precipitates out the phosphates in the water. With high phosphate levels more than one application may be required.
